This meme has been going around and Helena Bell tagged me to participate in it. Then she didn’t bother to tell me or anything, just expected google alerts to take care of that for her. Fortunately, I am narcissistic enough to have a google alert on my name. Her steal, I have thwarted it.
The idea behind the meme is that you answer questions about your current project. I’m in the middle of three projects, but I’ll pick the one that seems shiniest at the moment and go with that.
What is the working title of the book?
Maleuka, because I am a champion of picking a random word that shows up in whatever I put down before the first time I have to save the document.
Where did the idea come from for the book?
What genre does your book fall under?
I’ve been referring to it as a quasi-post-apocalyptic urban fantasy.
What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
I have no idea. Other than that Will Smith would need to play some part, just to make sure the movie is a box office smash and I’m famous forever because of it.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
People are miserable, they try to fix that, and then they die.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
Depending on how you want to count it, either five months or ten years.
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
Romeo and Juliet as story has always bugged me. The book is basically me jumping up and down and going, “Look! This is why that was a really stupid plan! Really, really stupid!!” Except with explosions and brain-scrambling.
What else about your book might pique a reader’s interest?
It’s about a world where a plague that kills kids has gotten the U.S. put under an international quarantine, which outs the secret societies that do things that look like magic, and causes the Canadians to build a wall to keep us out. The bit about the Canadians seems to be what catches most people’s interest.
Will your book be self-published or presented by an agency?
Whichever strikes me as the easiest path to personal gratification when I’m done revising it.
